We meet Ferrers School in London

Juin 2009 - YES! 12 élèves de la Section Européenne sont partis en TGV puis en Eurostar pour visiter Londres, et surtout pour rencontrer les élèves de notre école partenaire 'FERRERS'.

The Egyptian mummies of the British Museum are from Thebes in Egypte.

One mummy is of an old woman called Katabet.

The body is preserved with layers of cloth.
On the sarcophage there is a dark scarab, which is a magic protection.

After the death the body of a person of high rank was washed and the internal organs were taken out.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is the official residence in London of the British monarchy.

previously known under the name of Buckingham House, the building forming the current palace was first a big mansion built in 1703 for the duke of Buckingham and acquired by king George III in 1762 to make its private residence. It was enlarged during the 75 next years.

Queen Victoria was the first monarch to take up residence in Buckingham Palace in 1837.

Today Buckingham palace is the residence of the queen and the prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Besides that, the palace is the workplace of 450 persons who take charge of the paperwork. It is in the state apartments that the Queen receives and entertains guests invited to the Palace.

Changing of the guard

The men in front of Buckingham palace are not just ceremonial guard, but also sodiers.

The Household Division is made up of seven Regiments:

-The Household Cavalry Regiment - The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals -The Grenadier Guards - The Coldstream Guards - The Scots Guards-The Irish Guards - The Welsh Guards

Westminster and Whitehall

The City of Westminster is a borough of London with city status. It's in the west of the City of London and north of the River Thames.


There are here famous buildings:
- There's the Palace of Westminster which is the parliament of the United Kingdom.
- Whitehall, the famous central street of London where is the statue of Charles the First.
- There's Big Ben too, the big clock tower. Do you think it weighs 5 tons, or more than 10 tons ? It weighs more than 13,5 tons! .
This part of the city is considered as the political borough of London.

The Tate Modern is the first British gallery for modern art, and one of the most famous and touristic one of London. Located in an old power station, the gallery contains international modern art from 1900 to date, including writings of some famous artists of the 20th century like Picasso, Warhol or Dali. The ancient engine rooms have been redeployed into a huge hall that can receive amazing expositions!

The collection is organised around a series of themes rather than chronologically. The different topics are : History/Memory/Society/Nude/Action/BodyLandscape/Matter/Environment/Life/Object/Real Life.

Thanks to the success of the Tate Modern, the town hall of London has decided to create an extension which will be like a cubist "Babel tower" ( a sort of glass Pyramid ) and will be dedicated for photography and video. It should open in 2012.

Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar quare is a very famous place in Westminster in London. On this square Horatio Nelson is standing on his column guarded by 4 lion statues. This column was built after the battle of Trafalgar (1805) ,the British won this battle against the French. Horatio Nelson’s statue is standing at the top of the column because he died during the battle. A legend says that the lion statues were made with the hull of the French ships. Today people come there to eat sandwiches or to feed the pigeons, it’s a social place!
